Volunteering is . . . ever-growing fun

Three years ago during the October weekends, volunteer Lisa McGowan handed out samples of various fruits and vegetables including apples, watermelon, and tomatoes. People get to compare different varieties, which they love. (Especially the kids.) Farmer Scott would often fire up the outdoor wood-burning stove and cooks squash samples. And, the Guatemalan squash became one of Lisa’s favorite. It is so delicious - even without butter - which she didn’t think was possible.

When the flowers bloom at Well Rooted, another one of Lisa’s favorite activities is guiding visitors to the dill patch, where they can gather large bunches to use as a bouquet filler. She says, it is the superior bouquet filler to Babies Breath. The aroma, appearance, and flavor make dill weed one of her favorite herbs.

This year, Lisa assisted Farmer Sharon in planting dozens of different herbs in the fields learning so much about good gardening practices and the nutritional value of cilantro, parsley, basil and the rows and rows of dill.

Currently Lisa has been back at handing out samples, explaining the lay of the land to customers and scheduling the many folks that come regularly to the farm to volunteer with a large variety of tasks making the Well Rooted U-pick Produce and Flower Farm run smoother.
